Adapted from Victor Hugo's epic novel, this legendary sung-through musical traces the journey of Jean Valjean. Imprisoned for 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread, Valjean dares to break parole to rebuild his life, embarking on a lifelong quest for redemption and grace all while relentlessly pursued across decades by the uncompromising Inspector Javert.

AVAILABLE ROLES
Note: This production of Les Misérables is ensemble based which means many of the supporting and lead characters will be part of the ensemble when they are not their main characters. Also, some characters deal with different ranges of intimacy within this production.
With the exception of the characters Gavroche, Young Cosette, and Young Éponine, casting will be 18 and up.
JEAN VALJEAN (High Baritone/Bari-Tenor - Age 30s - 50s) – A man of great strength, endurance, and resilience. Served many years in prison and broke his parole. An act of grace gives him a second chance and transforms his outlook on life. He becomes a compassionate, deeply moral man who values humanity and charity. Despite his efforts for a peaceful life, he is continually hunted by inspector Javert. He later becomes a guardian for Fantine’s daughter Cosette.
JAVERT (Bass-Baritone - Age Late 20s - 50s) – A fanatic police inspector. Born in a jail and shown no love as a child, he is continually overcompensating for his shameful origins. He grows up to be rigid, unyielding, and merciless, defined by his absolute devotion to the law. He is commanding, dynamic, and moves with natural gravitas. He believes there is only black and white and redemption is impossible. Considers the law to be sacred and operates on the belief of “Once a criminal, always a criminal.” Is caught in a relentless hunt for the prisoner 24601, Jean Valjean.
FANTINE/ENSEMBLE (Lyric Mess-Sporano/Soprano - Age 20s - Mid 30s) – A poor factory worker and devoted mother who sends her child off to live with another family in hopes of giving her daughter a better life. She falls on hard times and in her desperation to make money sells her hair, her teeth, and falls into prostitution. She is strong, fearless, and faces the horrors of life head on. She is a survivor, who sacrifices everything for her child. She contracts tuberculosis and dies tragically after Jean Valjean vows to take care of her daughter Cosette.
MONSIEUR THÉNARDIER/ENSEMBLE (Comic Baritone - Age 30s – 50s) – A crooked innkeeper who steals from his patrons while keeping them nice and inebriated. He is a charismatic, narcissist con artist with a dark heart. He’s constantly reinventing himself and his crime schemes and soon goes from innkeeper to gang leader. He has a relentless desire for money and will do anything to get it, including looting from dead bodies or turning out his own daughter. Serves as the production’s main comedic relief.
MADAME THÉNARDIER/ENSEMBLE (Character Mezzo - Age 30s – 50s) – The brash and sharp-tongued wife of Monsieur Thénardier. Operates the inn that her and her husband own. She is tough, cruel, greedy, and abusive. She even treats her own children badly, but young Cosette gets the brunt of the abuse. She is cunning and knows how to manipulate. Both her and her husband are opportunistic criminals coming back like roaches every year. Role for a strong comedienne.
MARIUS/ENSEMBLE (Lyric Tenor - Age 20s – Early 30s) – A student of law and friends with the members of the Les Amis de l’ABC. He is idealistic and the bridge between the aristocracy and the working class. He is deeply passionate yet naive. Falls in love with Cosette at first sight, all while being completely blind to Eponine’s unrequited love.
ÉPONINE/ENSEMBLE (Mezzo-Soprano with Strong Belt - Age 18 – late 20s) – The Thénardiers’ daughter. She is hardened, street-smart, and forced to participate in her father’s crimes and begging schemes. Though she has a tough exterior, she is selfless and lonely. Wears her heart on her sleeve and yearns for a life of respectability. Has an unrequited love for Marius and would even take a bullet for him.
COSETTE/ENSEMBLE (Legit Lyric Soprano - Age 18 – late 20s) – The daughter of Fantine, raised by Jean Valjean. She is sheltered and exudes innocence. She is educated, idealistic, elegant, and graceful. She is frustrated by the secrets her father keeps. Has the quiet strength of a survivor, and though she has gone through hardships, she never became hardened or cynical. She is an angel for Jean Valjean and is deeply in love with Marius.
ENJOLRAS/ENSEMBLE (Baritone/Bari-Tenor - Age 20s – Early 30s) – The leader of the Les Amis de l’ABC. He is resolute, stoic, and inspiring. He is a thinker and man of action with extreme bravery. He is fiercely committed to the ideas of progress and the face of the revolution.
GAVROCHE (Treble/Boy Soprano/Young Alto - Age 10 – 13) - An abandoned child turned street urchin of the Thénardiers, left to fend for himself. Considers himself the leader of the streets of Paris. He is brave, witty, and a little arrogant. He is a little cheeky, but knows more beyond his years. He is a symbol of youthful bravery and the spirit of the revolution. Also doubles as Little Gervais.
YOUNG COSETTE (Treble/Girl Soprano - Age 7 - 11) – Daughter of Fantine in her younger years who was sent away to live with the Thénardiers where she is abused and neglected. Though she is treated horribly, she is soft and kind. A pure young soul. Escapes into her imagination and dreams of a better place where she can be happy.
YOUNG ÉPONINE (Treble/Girl Soprano - Age 7 - 11) - The Thénardiers’ daughter in her younger years. She is spoiled and bratty. She likes the finest clothes and fancy hats. She is also learning the ways of her parents and can be found committing petty crimes such as pickpocketing.
BISHOP OF DIGNE/ENSEMBLE (Bass-Baritone - Age 40s – 60s) – A kind and righteous to a fault bishop who sees past Jean Valjean’s criminal history. By showing mercy, he gives Jean Valjean a second chance at a new enlightened and virtuous life. Embodies grace and forgiveness. The catalyst for Jean Valjean’s journey to redemption.
COMBEFERRE/ENSEMBLE (Baritone - Age 20s – Early 30s) - A student and member of the Les Amis de l’ABC. He is a philosopher and scholar. Believes that education and human rights will lead to a better society. He is gentle and advocates for peaceful progress. Acts as the group's moral compass.
COURFEYRAC/EMSEMBLE (Baritone - Age 20s – Early 30s) - A student and a member of the Les Amis de l’ABC. He is charismatic, sociable, and honorable. He radiates warmth and tries to keep everyone’s spirits high even in the worst of times. Introduces Marius to the group of revolutionaries.
GRANTAIRE/ENSEMBLE (Baritone/Bass Baritone - Age 20s – Early 30s) - A student and member of the Les Amis de l’ABC. The pessimist in the group can be found drinking and asking whether their sacrifice will mean anything at all. He is cynical and has little interest in the revolution.
JOLY/ENSEMBLE (Tenor - Age 20s – Early 30s) - A student and member of the Les Amis de l’ABC. He is a medical student and chronic hypochondriac. He is lighthearted and eccentric, and he has some unusual theories about health. Like his name, he is the happiest of the group.
LESGLES/ENSEMBLE (Tenor/Baritone - Age 20s – Early 30s) - Also known as Boussuet. A student and member of the Les Amis de l’ABC. Though very unlucky in life, he remains humorous and optimistic. Best friends with Joly.
JEAN PROUVAIRE/ENSEMBLE (High Baritone/Tenor - Age 20s – Early 30s) - A student and member of the Les Amis de l’ABC. A hopeless romantic with knowledge of Italian, Latin, and Greek. He is tender and softspoken.
FEUILLY/ENSEMBLE (Baritone - Age 20s – Early 30s) – A member of the Les Amis de l’ABC. A self-educated orphan turned fan maker. He represents the voice of the working class.
FACTORY GIRL/ENSEMBLE (Mezzo-Soprano - Age 18 – 30s) – A jealous and mean-spirited factory worker. She’s secretly having an affair with the foreman and exposes that Fantine has a child out of her own desperation to stay on the foreman’s good side.
THE FOREMAN/ENSEMBLE (Baritone - Age 30s – 40s) – An overbearing, sleazy, and lecherous authority figure who runs the factory. He views all the women in the factory as his property and fires Fantine because she would not accept his advances.
OLD BEGGAR WOMAN/ENSEMBLE (Character Alto - Age 30s – 60s) – A wretched peddler who hawks good for a penny. She buys Fantine’s locket, and in the book even her teeth. Represents the desperation of the times.
WIGMAKER/ENSEMBLE (Mezzo-Soprano - Age 20s – 50s) – A slinky woman who utilizes Fantine’s desperation as a means of making money. Buys Fantine’s last shred of dignity, her gorgeous hair.
BAMATBOIS/ENSEMBLE (Tenor/Baritone - Age 20s – 40s) – A nasty and dangerous upper-class citizen. An idler who harasses Fantine. He is arrogant, sadistic, and expects women to do as he demands. Has power and abuses it.
FAUCHELEVANT/ENSEMBLE (Bass-Baritone - Age 20s – 50s) – A failed and unkind businessman who Jean Valjean saves from being crushed by a runaway cart. His near-death experience alters his outlook on the world.
ENSEMBLE (Any Voice Part - Ages 18 – 60+) – The ensemble is composed of convicts, farmers, laborers, nuns, innkeepers, inn patrons, constables, the poor, factory workers, sailors, whores, pimps, beggars, Parisian citizens, street urchins, gang members, a lesbian peot, an Army officer, revolutionaries, a major domo, wedding guests, and more.

Vocals
Please prepare 32 bars of any song in a similar style of the show. Please bring a copy of the sheet music for the accompanist. If you need help choosing a song please email info@theatretulsa.org
Those who are asked to sing again at callbacks will perform a song provided from the show.

Dance
Each block will consist of a dance call with a combination taught by the choreographer. Please bring appropriate dance clothes to change into after your vocal audition.

VIDEO AUDITIONS
Video auditions may be submitted through the Casting Manager website. Videos are due by Thursday, August 27 at 10pm.
IMPORTANT INFO
Rehearsals will begin October 19 and take place on Monday/Tuesday/Thursday evenings from 6:30pm-9:30pm and Saturdays typically from 10am-2pm. Breaks will be taken for the holidays. A tentative rehearsal schedule will be available at auditions.
Performances will be January 8-24, 2027 at The Tulsa Performing Arts Center.
